چکیده
1 I Background Sociological legacies Long before there was a conception of sustainable development, sociologists (as well as other social scientists) were conducting research on development issues (such as modernization, socioeconomic development, distorted development, unequal development, etc.) as well as sustainability issues (pollution, environmental degradation, resource depletion, key resource struggles and politics relating to oil, water, land, etc.). Selected sociological studies of environment and also development are briefly presented below, each in turn, before we go on to consider the emergence of the concept of sustainable development and some features of sustainable development as a sociological area of theory development and empirical research. In the conclusion, the article suggests that a new societal paradigm relating to sustainable development is emerging – and the study and conceptualization of this paradigm is a major challenge to contemporary sociology.
